UFC 264 Poirier vs McGregor 3 – Main Event UFC Fight Recap

UFC 264 Poirier vs McGregor 3 Fight Recap

Well UFC 264 Poirier vs McGregor 3 is in the books and when it comes to a UFC fight recap, these are the ones you don’t want to have to write.

It was all hot sauce and Irish whiskey in this trilogy match right out the gate when the two came to settle the score in Las Vegas in front of a raucous crowd.

After coming out in classic “Mystic Mac” style with a head kick that whiffed, McGregor would put it on Dustin Poirier’s lead leg hard in the opening seconds of the UFC 264 Poirier vs McGregor headliner.

McGregor obviously wanted to return the favor for The Diamond from their January scrap in Abu Dhabi at UFC 257 that saw him get his legs chewed up and end up knocked out against the fence. It looked good and Dustin was there landing clever combos in between McGregor’s various attacks. It was Dustin who gave Conor a bit of his signature sauce to the face that made McGregor go for the clinch – Not the best idea when facing the grappling guru.

McGregor went for an ill advised guillotine choke against the fence and ended up on his back. From there he was able to land some damaging elbows from the bottom, but Dustin was having none of it and proceeded to posture up and rain several elbows of his own on the Irishman. Mystic Mac was able to land at least one good up kick and after weathering a little more top control from the Diamond he was able to get to his feet.

McGregor immediately went on the offensive and tagged up Dustin right when they were back to their feet. Then tragedy struck and one of the weirdest injuries I’ve seen in the sport of mixed martial arts would happen.

After stepping back to throw another strike at Poirier, Conor McGregor would snap his left leg just above the ankle in horrifying fashion and go down hard. Neither the ref nor the Diamond seemed to see it and Dustin pounced on him for the finish.

Even if you are not a fan of Conor McGregor, you had to feel for the guy and nobody saw it coming. Why the booth needed to replay it so many times and in slow motion I have no idea. It was gruesome.

McGregor was screaming at the official that it better be marked as a doctor stoppage which shows a lot about his ability to focus. Poirier got on the mic for his post fight interview and was his usual self, called McGregor a dirtbag and then threw out the name of a kid with cancer in the stands and asked for donations to a charity.

McGregor decided to take the interview anyway and Joe Rogan sat down next to him, tough as they come. Unsurprisingly he was all piss and vinegar while hurling obscenities and insults about Dustin’s wife.

After the fight even UFC president Dana White commented that McGregor went too far and that wives should be left out of the cage.

With that Mystic Mac was taken out of the cage and the UFC 264 card came to a very, very bizarre close. We come to the end of our UFC recap with Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier putting a stamp on the trilogy while cashing his ticket to the UFC Championship fight against a dangerous Charles “Cowboy” Oliviera.
